Sorry Starbucks

I had one of those moments last night where I was thinking how my life could be different if I had a job.  It was prompted when I was standing around with a group of moms at one of my child’s practices.  They were talking about something on the Starbucks menu and I guess I was looking clueless because one of them said to me, “Don’t you go to Starbucks?”.  I replied that I was too cheap to go there.  Truth be told it’s not something that I budget for and yes we live on a budget.   Having five children and one steady income can sometimes be a feat that could be featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

I budget for Christmas and our family’s summer vacations.  It’s not as if my children are suffering Lord knows they have lots of “stuff”, although I do have moments of guilt when they want the latest something or other and there are times they don’t get it.  I think though that maybe it’s teaching them to be practical.  Maybe one day they’ll hate me for it or maybe one day they’ll realize the time I was there for them means more.  I can’t say.  I know that my mom worked and I know that is where I get my obsession with staying home from.  I’m not saying any woman who works is a bad mom by any means don’t get me wrong! I love my mom and she is a great mom but I wasn’t ever fond of being a latchkey kid.

After coming home from the practice though I won’t lie.  My gears were turning thinking about all the “things” I could have if I would just go to work at a real job.  But then after mentally listing all the nifty things I could get if I had a job.  I thought about what was important to me and that’s being with my children.  There will be tons of things I might not ever have but watching them grow up and being here for them is just something I’m not willing to sacrifice.

Sorry Starbucks.
